LED Lighting Fixtures Creates 750 Lumen Recessed Light and Uses Only 16 Watts of Power
January 26, 2006
Fixture Delivers as Much Light as a 60 Watt Incandescent
Bulb
DURHAM, NC –
January 26, 2006
LED Lighting
Fixtures Inc. (LLF) today announced the development of its first prototype LED
(light emitting diode) based fixture that provides as much light as a 60 watt
incandescent bulb while only consuming 16 watts or 27 percent of the power. The
fixture, a recessed can light, was measured by an independent testing service
as providing 753 lumens of white light with an AC power input of only 15.9
watts, representing true wall-plug performance. This output equaled 47 lumens
per watt of light.
“One hundred days
ago, we served notice that we were going to usher in a disruptive change in
general lighting technology coupled with a dramatic increase in lifetimes
(decades) and greatly reduced energy consumption,” said Neal Hunter, LLF’s
chairman. “Our first results exceeded our expectations and we now believe that
existing LED technology can go much further. The days of choosing between a grossly
inefficient incandescent bulb or a mercury-laden fluorescent product may soon
be coming to an end.”
The LLF technical
team included Gerry Negley and Thomas Coleman from the Research Triangle, and
Tony van de Ven and Spencer Ho from the company’s Hong Kong office. Gerry
Negley, LLF’s chief technology officer, said the team understands and is
solving the issues that have kept LEDs out of mainstream illumination
applications.
“In about three
months, we’ve created one of the world’s premier LED lighting fixtures
supported by five patent filings,” added Negley. “We are targeting a release of
resultsfrom our warm white fixture within 60 days.” LED lighting is significant
in that it should provide decades of lifetime under normal operation, requiring
a fraction of the power required for traditional lighting solutions.
LLF is in the
process of expanding its team and moving to new headquarters in the Triangle.
Funding for the privately held company is being provided by its founding
members. A decision to accept outside funding from individual or corporate
sources has not been finalized.
The company used
CSA International’s Atlanta Lighting Laboratory to conduct the product
measurement. CSA International is accredited by the Occupational Health and
Safety Administration (OSHA) as a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory
(NRTL).
