Green Lighting Company Announces University of Arkansas to Adopt Energy Saving LED Lighting

Rogers, AR, June 25, 2007 – Green Lighting Company (GLC) announced today that the University of Arkansas main campus in Fayetteville will install new and revolutionary six-inch LED recessed light fixtures in the Chancellor’s Residence for general illumination. The light fixtures are made by LED Lighting Fixtures, Inc. (LLF), located near Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.  The University of Arkansas is the first educational institution in the United States to adopt LLF’s LED lighting technology.

Utilizing LLF’s LED downlights, the University will minimize energy consumption and its carbon footprint, reduce electricity and maintenance costs, and be environmentally friendly without compromising performance or quality of light.

Jeff Beaver, GLC’s VP of Sales, stated, “The University of Arkansas’ commitment to energy efficiency and sustainability is demonstrated by their action to adopt LED lighting. The leadership of Chancellor John White and the University of Arkansas sets a high standard of sustainability for all other University campuses to follow.”

LEDs are one of the world’s most energy efficient light sources, consuming up to 85% less energy than conventional lighting. LED lighting enables extraordinary savings on monthly utility bills, maintenance costs, reduction of heating and cooling demands, and bulb replacements. By adopting LLF’s technology, the University will save between $400.00 and $800.00 per month compared to incandescent lighting sources, depending on actual daily usage. In a 20-year life-cycle cost comparison, including initial costs, LED lighting will save the University up to $319,000.00 compared to incandescent, and $61,000.00 over fluorescent sources. Payback of the initial investment is estimated to be a little over one year from energy savings and reduced maintenance costs. Robert Beeler, Director of Design and Construction Services Division for the University, stated, “The University of Arkansas is pleased to adopt LLF’s LED lighting fixture. It is both environmentally friendly and energy efficient while providing a better quality of light, with no sacrifices required. This is yet another step we are taking to make our campus sustainable and energy efficient. We look forward to adopting this technology throughout our campus.”

According to the Department of Energy (DOE), lighting consumes 22% of all electricity generated in the United States. In the next 20 years, the DOE estimates that with rapid adoption of LED lighting, the U.S. can:

  • reduce electricity demands from lighting by 62%
  • eliminate 258 million metric tons of carbon emissions
  • avoid building 133 new power plants
  • anticipate financial savings that could exceed $115 billion

About LLF’s LR6
LLF’s LR6 is the first LED lighting fixture to equal the output, appearance and lighting quality of a 65 watt incandescent while offering an appealing cost of ownership. It can be used in commercial and residential applications for both retrofit and new construction installations. The LR6 fits into virtually any standard six-inch recessed housing. LLF’s fixture delivers an average of 650 lumens at only 12 watts, and is available in two color temperatures, 2700K (warm) and 3500K (neutral). The LR6 emanates no noticeable heat, and produces no UV.
